What Wind Tunnel Is and Isn't

  • It's not a directory of resources.
  • It's not a community calendar of events.
  • It's not a classified ad website, like Craig's List. You can't post things here on your own (aside from comments).
  • It's not a 'job board.'
  • It's not an internship-placement or referral service.
  • It's not a complete or comprehensive resource for learning about resources in the county. There's no end to the volunteer, internship or job opportunities in Windham County — you could map for a thousand years and still not capture them all. And if you did map for a thousand years, the information you gathered at the beginning would be long outdated by the time you finished. (Not to mention, the people would be dead.) We find the opportunities that young people are likely to be most interested in, and that's what we map. Are there other great things out there? Sure. Tell us about them, and we'll map them, too.

  • It is a place where young people can get hard information about the jobs they might be interested in doing, either now or in the future.
  • It is a place where young people can find interesting and rewarding volunteer work to do close to home.
  • It is a website designed to work for you if you're motivated. You have to do the work of looking, and you have to do the work of following up on what interests you. We can't do this for you, and hey, would you really want us to? It's your life, after all.
  • It is a place where young people — and in fact all people — can figure out where to get help for certain urgent needs, like getting a free meal.
  • It is a flexible, growing project. The categories of opportunity that young people map will grow and change. We'll add categories, and maybe even delete some. For instance, in the near future, we know we'll be tackling 'cheap things to do,' a topic teens and young adults keep telling us they're interested in.
  • It is adaptable to different kinds of groups. Journalism classes, hands-on career-exploration classes, and community youth groups of all kinds can become 'mapping' groups. Any youth group supervised by an adult can take part in mapping opportunities in their quadrant of the county. Just call us, and we'll tell you how to get started.
  • It does seeks the active input of the whole community, youth and adults alike. We want to help bridge the chasm between young people and adults, and make the transition to adulthood easier. Therefore we need to know what's helpful and what's not, what's on target and what's off. Let us know!
